Facilities

The Equine Specialty Hospital boasts one of the best equipped university or private equine hospitals in the country. With 27 stalls, 3 barns, Neonatal Intensive Care unit, 2 surgical suites, Isolation facilities, Podiatry Center, and dedicated Neurological stall with sling support, combined with boarded specialist and a dedicated staff, all the needs of our equine patients are met to ensure the best in quality care.

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the Equine Specialty Hospital is fully equipped to accommodate several foals requiring intensive medical or surgical care.  The unit has fully-padded and heated neonate stalls.  These stalls are equipped for in-stall oxygen delivery, in-stall vital sign monitoring (ECG, indirect blood pressure, etc.), and continuous intravenous fluid and parenteral nutrition administration.  The dam of the critically ill neonate can be housed in an immediately adjacent stall.  She may be allowed visual contact, direct contact, or no contact with the foal as appropriate.

A separate 12’ x 12’ climate controlled (heat and air conditioned) stall is equipped with a foal bed.  This stall allows the mare and foal to stay together in an intensive care setting.  The level of intensive care provided to neonates is tailored to the patient’s needs.  Continuous nursing care for critically ill neonates is standard and continues until improvement in the foal’s condition dictates otherwise.

Soft Tissue
Orthopedic

Surgical Suites

The Equine Specialty Hospital has two fully equipped surgical suites.  The first is suited primarily for orthopedics and the second for soft tissue surgery.  All necessary equipment for the procedure being performed is readily available to the surgical team.  This may include: video endoscopic units, lasers, ultrasound, radiography, electrocautery, endo-stapling equipment, insuflation units, arthroscopes, laparoscopes, and all the necessary orthopedic equipment for fracture repair.

All horses recover from anesthesia in one of three recently renovated fully padded induction/recovery stalls with continuous monitoring

Imaging Center

The imaging center at The Equine Specialty Hospital is the heart of our diagnostic facility. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computed Tomography (CT), Nuclear Scintigraphy (Bone Scan), Digital Radiography, Digital Ultrasound, Endoscopy, Gastroscopy, Thoracoscopy, and Laparoscopy are all performed on a routine basis. All digital media is archived together through a PACS system and maintained for safe storage and ease of access.

Isolation

There are two 12'x12' isolation stalls at The Equine Specialty Hospital. These stalls are located in a separate building that separates the horses with potentially contagious diseases from the general hospital populations.

Each Stall is equipped with separate ventilation systems as well as continuous video monitoring. The stalls also have dedicated equine and personnel entrances.

Neurologic and/or Recumbent Stall

A dedicated, fully padded stall is available with dynamic sling support for horses with orthopedic or neurological problems.  Horses can be protected from injury if unstable or recumbent with padded floors, walls, and doors.  A hoist is also present to allow us to support any percentage of weight.  The sling and hoist are designed to permit the horse to freely walk around the stall while being supported.

Podiatry Center

The Equine Specialty Hospital maintains a comprehensive on-site Equine Podiatry Center. The purpose of the center is to accommodate the specific therapeutic and corrective shoeing requirements of many of our equine patients. With the support of the hospitals diagnostic capabilities, including detailed lameness evaluation, CT scanner, MRI, digital radiography, digital ultrasound and nuclear scintigraphy, the center prides itself on the quality and accuracy of its work.

Laboratory

Equine Specialty Hospital’s in-house laboratory is available 24 hours a day permitting us to rapidly receive results.  The laboratory allows us to evaluate serum chemistry’s, complete blood counts, blood electrolytes, blood gases, coagulation profiles, cytology’s, and endoparasite evaluations.
