Medical Services

The Medicine Service of the Equine Specialty Hospital provides comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic services for the equine patient. Evaluations are performed by board certified internists. A partial list of services provided by the Medicine Service includes:

RESPIRATORY TRACT ASSESSMENT: Video endoscopy of the upper airway, thoracic radiography, transtracheal washes, thoracic ultrasound, and bronchoalveolar lavage

NEUROLOGIC CONCERNS: Comprehensive neurological examination, standing cervical radiographs, cerebrospinal fluid analysis, myelography. Intensive care of neurologic patients.

INTENSIVE CARE OF NEWBORNS: Round the clock intensive care in a neonatal unit equipped with supplemental oxygen, climate controlled environment, memory foam pads. Oral and intravenous forms of supplemental nutrition are available along with 24 hour a day laboratory support, nursing care, and medicine specialist.

ASSESSMENT OF WEIGHT LOSS: Comprehensive physical examination diagnostic laboratory assessment, abdominal ultrasound, peritoneal fluid analysis, absorption tests, endoscopic assessment of the stomach (gastroscopy).

CARE OF LAMINITIC PATIENTS: Diagnostic radiographs including venograms, integrated veterinary-farrier services. Long-term convalescent care available.

OPHTHAMOLOGY:Diagnostic assessment, consultation with board certified Ophthamologist, intensive round the clock treatment for complex ocular cases.

GASTROSCOPY: Evaluation of the horses stomach an important component of the evaluation of cases of colic, weight loss, inappetanee and “poor-doers”. Many Equine practitioners have 1 meter endoscopes – flexible fiber optic light devices which allow visualization of the upper airway, but these endoscopes are not long enough to allow visualization of the adult equine stomach. The Equine Specialty Hospital has recently acquired a 3-Meter Olympus gastroscope which provides excellent visualization of the stomach. Endoscopic Images can be documented on a digital printer.
